In the compact SUV market, Toyota already offers the C-HR and the RAV4. But the first, 4.39 meters long, favors style to the detriment of livability, and the second has grown a lot, reaching 4.60 meters. Toyota therefore thought that an intermediate proposal could be wise. It takes the form of the Corolla Cross.
If you are a loyal reader of Caradisiac, the model may remind you of something. It was indeed presented in mid-2021 in Thailand. It was then announced in the United States and Japan. The Japanese firm seems to have hesitated more for Europe, because of the success of the C-HR. The Corolla Cross is close in size, with 7 cm more in length, or 4.46 meters. But the brand has therefore decided to import it to us, in order to offer a more family and practical alternative to the C-HR.
More classic too, because the design is much wiser. The European model is almost identical to that offered in Asia. The changes relate to light signatures. At the front, the stretched optics come to stick to the grille, in the shape of a trapezoid, a link of kinship with the large SUVs of the brand. In profile, the wheel arches are reminiscent of the RAV4. The wings are well inflated.
The dashboard is derived from that of the “classic” Corolla. The European model is more technological, it receives new 12.3-inch digital instrumentation and a larger 10.5-inch touch screen. The latter is associated with a new generation of multimedia system, with connected services and remote updates.
The difference compared to the C-HR is therefore in the rear seat. Access is easier, thanks to a wider opening, and better habitability. Above all, visibility is improving, the C-HR being equipped with loopholes! Another advantage of the Corolla Cross: a much larger trunk, with a volume of nearly 490 liters, against 377 liters for the C-HR.
A more efficient and more pleasant engine
But the most important element of this umpteenth SUV is under the hood. The Corolla Cross inaugurates the fifth generation of Toyota’s simple hybrid powertrain. Many mechanical components have been revised to be more compact and lighter. The lithium-ion battery thus sees its weight drop by 40%. The transaxle assembly has been redesigned with new lubrication systems that use low viscosity oil.
The brand promises a better pleasure, with a more linear operation thanks to a better relation between the pressure on the accelerator and the real response of the engine. Consumption is still announced to fall while power is on the rise, the 2.0 gasoline and electric motor combination here developing 197 hp. The model is available in both traction and four-wheel drive versions. The latter has a second electric unit which drives the rear wheels if necessary.
Taking the GA-C platform from the compact, the Corolla Cross also inaugurates new driving aids at Toyota, for example with a pre-collision system that includes the complete stop of the vehicle at low speed, crossing intersections, as well as improved detection of oncoming traffic.
If the model is announced for the fall of 2022 in Europe, the French subsidiary indicates that the date of marketing with us remains to be fixed.
