The Swiss Trade Union Union (USS) will launch an offensive for wage increases and better pensions. Its delegates also decided on Friday to fight “unacceptable tax giveaways” intended for high incomes and great fortunes.

While the economy is booming, household income is stagnant, denounces the USS in a press release. The burden of health insurance premiums has become “more and more unbearable” and wages are lagging behind.
The union leader asks for more premium reductions in health insurance, as required by a popular initiative of the PS: no one should spend more than 10% of his salary on premiums. It also demands a thirteenth salary for everyone. One in six employees does not have a thirteenth salary, she recalls.
The USS also calls for a thirteenth AVS annuity – the subject of an initiative it launched at the end of June. She promises to fight “any deterioration” in the field of pensions, whether it is the increase in the retirement age for women or a reduction in pensions.
No to tax gifts
On the other hand, it is not to tax gifts for the “privileged”. The unions “clearly” reject and will “firmly” fight the tax cuts provided by the Federal Council and Parliament in the areas of stamp duty, withholding tax and direct federal tax.
The abolition of stamp duty, accepted by the Chambers during the summer session, would cost 250 million francs per year, according to the left and the unions. At the beginning of October, they filed a referendum with 65,000 signatures against this measure. The object will be submitted to the people on February 13th.
During the autumn session, the National accepted a reform of the withholding tax which provides for the abolition of the withholding tax on interest and the stamp duty on trading on Swiss bonds. The left is opposed to it. The Council of States will take up the subject during the winter session.
Develop the public service
The USS also believes that it is time to develop and modernize the public service. With the coronavirus pandemic, “we have seen again and impressively how important public service is to society and the economy,” she said.
“But as if no lessons had been learned from past and current crises, the public service must face new attacks,” the statement added. The USS notably cites the privatization of Postfinance and the total liberalization of the electricity market.
Or the “Uniform financing of ambulatory and stationary services”, by which the government and the National “intend to leave the management of health financing in the hands of the private economy”. The unions “will continue to vehemently oppose all these dismantling projects,” she warns.
Support for Smood employees
In a resolution, USS delegates gave their support to the staff of the Smood home meal delivery company, which is on strike in many towns in French-speaking Switzerland. They also protested against the abolition by La Poste of vouchers for retirees. This reduction in annual benefit of 200 francs is not acceptable.
