Mammoths Were Not That Long ago

An important discovery has been made about mammoths. Indeed, several researchers have succeeded in demonstrating that the latter had not disappeared from the planet as long as other scientists thought. In an article in the journal Nature Communications, the conclusions of a DNA analysis of permafrost sediments having been extracted in the locality of Klondike in the center of the Canadian territory of Yukon, have been published.

Researchers used DNA capture-enrichment technology

Researchers from the government of Yukon, universities ofAlberta, from McMaster and the American Museum of Natural History were able to know that the woolly mammoth and the North American horse, were still alive until 5,000 years earlier. This research carried out over tens of thousands of years of history has enabled scientists to identify the period during which these animals became extinct. They would therefore have lived until the middle of the Holocene. To reach these conclusions, the researchers used DNA capture-enrichment technology to reconstruct ancient ecosystems. This is thanks to several soil samples that contain billions of genomic and microscopic sequences of both plant and animal species.

With this technology, the researchers were able to put together a portrait of the flora and fauna that existed during the transition Pleistocene-Holocene, which dated from 11,000 to 14,000 years ago. It was during this period that a significant number of species, including mammoths and mastodons, disappeared or diminished.
