Taiwan reassures China’s military exercises simulate an attack

The island’s armed forces issued a warning in response to Chinese maneuvers, sent air and sea patrols around, and activated land-based missile systems.

Taiwan announced on Saturday military exercises of the Chinese Following the President’s visit, several Chinese warships and aircraft appear to simulate an attack on the autonomous island after crossing the midline of the Taiwan Strait. According to Taiwan’s Kinmen Defense Command, four drones believed to be Chinese from Taiwan were spotted in the waters around the Kinmen island group and nearby Lieyu Island and Beiding Islet.

The Taiwanese army fired warning flares in response.

Kinmen, also known as Quemoy, is a group of islands in the Taiwan Strait located just 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) east of the Chinese coastal city of Xiamen in Fujian province, separating two sides divided amid civil war. 1949.

“Our government and military are closely monitoring China’s military exercises and information warfare operations, ready to respond if necessary.” Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said in a tweet.

“I urge the international community to support democratic Taiwan and stop any escalation in the regional security situation,” he said..

Chinese military exercises began last Thursday and are expected to last until Sunday. So far, the exercises have included missile strikes on targets in the seas in the north and south of the island, an echo of the last major Chinese military exercises in 1995 and 1996 aimed at intimidating Taiwanese leaders and voters.

Taiwan put its own military on alert and civil defense exercises, while the United States deployed large numbers of naval forces to the region.

The Biden administration and Pelosi said the United States remains committed to the “one China” policy, which recognizes Beijing as the Chinese government but allows for informal relations and defense ties with Taipei. Management was discouraged but did not prevent Pelosi from visiting him.

China also broke off defense talks with the United States and sanctioned Pelosi in retaliation for the visit.

In Tokyo, the final stop on her Asian tour, Pelosi said on Friday that China cannot isolate Taiwan by preventing US officials from traveling there.

Pelosi has long been a human rights activist in China. He, along with other lawmakers, visited Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1991 to support democracy, two years after a bloody military crackdown on the square’s protesters.
