Taiwan had already held military exercises in the same area on Tuesday. Hundreds of men attended these two sessions of his, according to the military. Officials are minimizing the scope of these exercises to ensure they are already scheduled and not in response to China’s exercises.

Beijing organized a major operation in early August in response to a visit to the island by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China conducted several days of air and sea exercises around the island.
